What To Expect in a Physical Therapy Session

Whether you’re attending your first physical therapy session or you’ve been coming to our clinic for months, our goal at Tailor-Made Physical Therapy is to help you feel completely comfortable throughout your entire session.

Your physical therapist in Troy, IL, will begin by asking you about your symptoms, including your level of pain and the impact your condition has had on your lifestyle. We’ll then complete an examination to learn more about your injury, assessing your:

  • Range of motion
  • Strength

Test assured that we will be extremely sensitive to your areas of pain during your examination.

Next, we will discuss your treatment plan with you, detailing the expected outcomes of your treatment and the anticipated timeline.

We typically begin treatment at the first appointment. We may use a few different therapies to relieve your pain, improve movement, and promote healing. At the end of your session, we will prescribe exercises you can perform at home to continue strengthening the target area between sessions.

Finally, we will recommend how often you should return for treatments and schedule your next appointment.

Meet the Team

We stay involved in the physical therapy community as well with memberships in the local, state, and national physical therapy associations.

Matt Helfrich, CEO Tailor-Made Physical Therapy

Matt Helfrich is a St. Louis native and Madison County resident who graduated from Saint Louis University in January 2007 with a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy. He has worked in the outpatient setting in St. Louis since becoming a licensed physical therapist, including 2 years of treating veterans at the St. Louis VA Hospital.

He became a clinical director and part owner of a clinic in Creve Coeur in 2015 while continuing to treat patients. Matt has focused his continuing education on treating sports and general outpatient orthopedic conditions. As an Astym Certified therapist, he specializes in working with complex shoulder conditions and preventing future injuries.

His free time is dedicated to spending time with his wife, son and daughter - and the occasional round of golf with friends. His passion at home and within the community is centered around giving back to others with a focus on delivering more value than is asked of him. This has been his north star as a husband, father, friend, therapist, small business owner and entrepreneur.

Allison Schaal was born and raised in the metro east area and graduated with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Saint Louis University in 2012. Since graduating, Allison has worked in a number of settings including acute care, home health, and outpatient clinics. As a previous collegiate athlete, Allison recognizes how important it is to patients to return to their favorite activities quickly. She has a passion for connecting with others and finding the factors that motivate a patient in order to help them improve. Allison enjoys working with all patients, but especially enjoys working with the older population! Allison joined the Tailor Made team in July of 2023.

When asked why she enjoys her role at Tailor Made, she says “This clinic has such a special feel to it. We have so much fun here, all while providing exceptional care. No two exercise programs are the same. This job has pushed me to become a better clinician, and I feel so lucky to be a part of this team.” In her free time, Allison enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, reading, playing tennis, and talking about all things Taylor Swift.

Rachel Wasilewski was born and raised in Illinois, and graduated with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Maryville University of St. Louis in 2023. Rachel completed one of her clinical internships as a student at Tailor-Made Physical Therapy in the summer of 2023, and returned to work here in early February as a full-time Physical Therapist.

Rachel also has experience with completing clinical internships as a student physical therapist at a corporate owned outpatient clinic, a rural mix rehabilitation hospital, and an acute care hospital setting. Rachel discovered her passion for physical therapy after an ACL injury in 2016. Rachel enjoys treating all patients during recovery, and has a passion for working with young athletes. She loves helping others reach their unique goals and seeing the joy and smiling faces when athletes are able to return to the sport they love most.

Rachel enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and her dog, Rex. She loves traveling, and enjoying all things outdoors, especially boating and camping. She has a passion for helping others who are recovering from injuries, and plans on furthering her education with continuing her studies in orthopedic rehabilitation, sports specific physical therapy, ASTYM certification, and physical therapy for neurologic disorders.

Dylan grew up in Carlye and graduated from the local high school. He found his passion for caring for other people through several different roles in health care before enrolling in Kaskian College’s Physical Therapist Assistant’s School.

He graduated in 2019, then worked as a traveling therapist for several years gaining experience from many different clinicians all over Southern Illinois.

Dylan joined the Tailor-Made Team in March 2023, and received his ASTYM certification a month later. He enjoys treating the large variety of patients we have at Tailor-Made Physical Therapy, but his favorite part of therapy is developing relationships with patients and helping them achieve their specific goals.

He and his wife live in Breese, Illinois with two children, and they enjoy being a part of the scout program and partaking in all things outdoors.

Rachel Skort Tailor-Made Physical Therapy

Rachel is from Centralia and moved to the Troy area after high school. She started her passion in physical therapy in 2013 as a Physical Therapy Aide. Under the guidance of the physical therapists, she worked with patients that were rehabbing from sports injuries and other orthopedic injuries/surgeries.

While she was happy helping patients achieve their goals and getting to know them, Rachel knew that she was meant for a more challenging role in the clinic. She began to learn the front office role as a hybrid position, and it was a natural fit for her thanks to the mix of customer service and the intricacies of dealing with health insurance.

In 2016, Rachel was promoted to Front Desk Coordinator while working for Matt at his clinic in Missouri. After being removed from the old clinic for several years, Matt was able to rehire Rachel as his Office Manager in 2022.

In Rachel’s free time she enjoys spending time with her son and friends. She likes to use her creative side and work on DIY house projects and refurbishing old furniture.

Stephanie M. Patient

Matt Helfrich came highly recommended by Advanced Orthopedics and once you've worked with him, you will understand why! I had the pleasure of working with Matt a few times; he helped me through knee pain and recovery from knee surgery. Matt was also able to alleviate my student-athlete's back pain with stretching exercises that she continues to use even after treatment. Matt is knowledgeable, informative, trustworthy and caring. He's patient and has a great ability to explain the exercises and their benefits. I would have to say, I'd also give him a few stars for his sense of humor and his playlists too!

Shellie S. Patient's Mother

Matt at Tailor-Made Physical Therapy was fantastic to work with. My daughter was suffering from a sports related injury. He was able to work with her 2 times a week and rid her of her pain. I truly believe he worked with her and then some . I’ve never seen her stronger out on the field . Thank you Matt for all you’ve done !! And thank you Allie for the recommendation!!!

Deania J. Patient

I went to see Matt for shoulder/neck pain as well as some vertigo/dizziness. He was able to relieve the vertigo with the first session. For my Neck and Shoulder he was able to educate me on the issue causing my pain and teach me strengthening exercises that I can do at home to increase my flexibility and strength in the area causing pain. He was very professional, took time to listen to me and help me with my issues. Within just a few sessions I was able to increase the strength in the neck and shoulder to nearly eliminate the pain all together. After a few more sessions and working at home I have no doubt I will be pain free. Very pleased with the treatment that I received with Matt at Tailor-Made Physical Therapy.
